Challenges Unique to Sussex
Planning, the South Downs and Conservation Areas
The South Downs National Park runs the width of the county. It takes in Lewes, Arundel, Midhurst and Petworth and reaches the coast at Eastbourne. The High Weald National Landscape covers much of the north east, around Crowborough, Wadhurst and East Grinstead.Then there are the conservation areas. Brighton’s Regency seafront, The Lanes, Lewes, Rye, Arundel, and Chichester are all included. Sussex also has many listed commercial buildings that are still in use.
Any of these building types or locations can change where a condenser is allowed to go. A unit that would sit on a front elevation anywhere else may need moving to the rear or screening from view. We work this out during the initial survey.
Coastal Sites and Salt Corrosion
A large share of Sussex’s commercial premises sit within a few miles of the sea. Salt-laden air attacks an outdoor unit’s coil and casing faster than inland conditions. It is the single most common reason a coastal system fails years earlier than it should.
We look at corrosion protection at seafront and near-coastal sites. These sites are in Brighton and Hove, Worthing, Eastbourne, Hastings, Bognor Regis, and Littlehampton. When we specify the unit, we also site the condenser to limit direct exposure where the building allows it.
Servicing & F-Gas Compliance
Once a commercial system is installed, the duty to maintain it sits with the building owner or operator rather than the installer. Systems holding more than a set amount of refrigerant have to be leak checked at defined intervals under F-Gas regulations and the records have to be kept.
We are Refcom registered and F-Gas certified. Leak checks and the paperwork that goes with them are handled as part of a service visit, and every system we install is handed over with an F-Gas logbook already set up for its first check.
Most of our commercial customers are on a maintenance contract. That covers scheduled servicing through the year and sets an agreed response time for breakdowns.
